Alexandria, Virginia Marketing Resources
One of the oldest cities in the U.S., Alexandria, Virginia is well known for its rich colonial history and is considered the adopted hometown of America’s first president, George Washington. A replica of Washington’s townhome can be found on Cameron Street, and his final home, Mount Vernon, is just nine miles south of Alexandria. The city was founded by Scottish merchants in 1749 and named after Scotsman John Alexander. It was once one of the ten busiest seaports in America and a tobacco trading post.
An important area for many American wars, some of the Civil War’s deadliest battles took place near Alexandria – the Battle of Fredericksburg, the First Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Chancellorsville. It was also the longest occupied town in the war. Today, many people visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which honors an unidentified soldier of the American Revolutionary War, whose remains were unearthed in 1826 in Alexandria.
